Brief Intro

Hey there, my name is Shawn Marine. Welcome to my website portfolio, where I can share my projects with employers and people I know. This section of the site is about me.

Professional Background

I'm currently a junior in college, and I've only gone through one co-op so far. Before my first co-op, I worked at the Khoury College of Computer Science on campus as a lab administrator. I managed a team of 14 lab assistants and helped students and professors around campus with Khoury owned equipment. Helping fix things like printers, projectors, screens for zoom meetings, microphones, anything of that sort. â€‹â€‹

Before working at Khoury, I conducted research the summer prior to entering Northeastern. I worked closely with Dr. Chris McKay, who I met through my high school's astronomy club. I was grateful to get the chance to do research on galactic habitable zones, and I learned a lot through that process.

Education

I was extremely fortunate to earn a full scholarship to attend Northeastern University, and since then have been working towards a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and really enjoying it. Some of my favorite classes here at Northeastern have been dynamics, modern physics, electrical engineering and robot dynamics.

Passion and Mission

My passion for mechanical engineering started in high school. I was part of my school's astronomy club and I wanted to be an aerospace engineer at first. I started reading a wide variety of books, ranging from science fiction, to physics, to philosophy, neuroscience, and more. I discovered that my interests were too varied to choose a specific path, and decided to go with mechanical engineering instead, because it is applicable to all fields, and would give me time to figure things out. I knew for sure I wanted to work as an engineer, but didn't want to pigeonhole myself to a specific industry yet. My passion for learning about how the world works has driven me thus far in my career. I hope to continue learning and building my skillset, so that I can create solutions for the betterment of humanity.

Work Philosophy

My approach to engineering is very simple. I like to work from first principles, because in order for me to make swift decisions about what to do, I like to know how the system works as a whole. I ask a lot of questions and run ideas by colleagues. I like to test out multiple approaches, and will usually CAD various designs before picking one to move forward with. â€‹

Professional Values

I value reliability, communication, and curiosity in my professional approach. Reliability means delivering on tasks and supporting colleagues. I aim to be the dependable team member others can rely on. Communication is key for bringing ideas to life; understanding colleagues' choices and discussing them enhances project understanding and effectiveness. Curiosity, aligned with a growth mindset, drives me to explore better ways of doing things, promoting continuous improvement for both myself and the team.
